Current English for Language Skills

The present book of selections is based on the editors' belief that the college learner most of all needs to be acquainted with the idiom of current English, that this should be presented to him in well- chosen passages of some literary merit and that these passages should be used as contexts for intensive language teaching. The transition from school to college is marked by a shift in emphasis from the knowledge of the language skills, such as are required in reading subject textbooks in English and taking notes from them, listening to lectures with comprehension, writing reports of laboratory experiments and answer to the examination questions, etc.
